Annual Retreat

As of 2012, HeRA has reimplemented our Annual Member Retreat

This is a weekend get-away in the fall where members can immerse themselves in craft and enjoy the companionship of fellow writers or take some necessary solitude to accomplish writing.

This year, members will be gathering the weekend after Labor Day, September 7-9 in Independence, Missouri. We're keeping it local and keeping it inexpensive so everyone can attend!

We will spend Friday immersed in a murder-mystery event to break the ice. After the fun, we'll gather for small group critique and simple downtime.

On Saturday, HeRA has organized a day of workshops. Check out these wonderful programs presented by HeRA members, local authors, and industry professionals!

Point of View
What is it, how to employ it, and what makes effective narrative voice in writing. This acclaimed program by special guest Alfie Thompson, is a must-hear for all serious novelists.
Hero Creation
Alpha, Beta, or something in between? What makes a man, manly, and when does he cross the line? Dyann Love Barr will share techniques to make your hero swoon-worthy while still keeping him a guy.
Showing Emotion
Emotion is the core of romance. Special guest Heather Snow will share her wisdom on how to show, not tell, the emotions your characters are going through.
Plotting
Do you pants, do you plot, do you know? Claire Ashgrove will present the bare bones of plotting, and how to take it to the next level, while still giving yourself room to fly by the seat of your pants.
Writer's Technical Toolbox
In the digital age there are an abundance of necessary and optional technological tools for the writer. Join Dennis Barr and his presentation on the gadgets and the necessary evils every writer must tackle.
Engaging Dialogue
A witty reparte is sure to grab a reader's attention. Denise Grover Swank will share tips and tricks to help your dialogue flow and make it interesting.
Self-Publishing How To's
Everyone's talking about it. But how do you put it all together? Dane Zeller will walk you through the techincal need-to-knows for self publishing.
Criminal Minds
Writing a villian? Need a street-wise heroine? Join our local law enforcement professional who will share insight behind every-day criminal minds. Learn some shocking statistics and facts as well.
Real Paranormality
Can a witch really just wave a magic wand? What's it sound like to hear voices from the beyond? We've invited a gifted paranormal professional to tell us about the realities of psychic gifts and encounters with the unknown.
Character Motivation
Goal, Motivation, and Conflict -- we've all heard it. But what types of character motivation make for entertaining reading? How can motivation enhance your story? Join our special guest to learn why this is important and how to improve this necessary element.

Remember, the HeRA Retreat is for Members-Only. If you'd like to participate, please come visit us and learn what we're all about. The retreat is a perfect way to really get to know each other! And as we can attest, after a weekend of immersion, we leave ready and energized to finish that novel!

Hope to see you there!
